Walking Through Battlefields

You can learn a lot about battles from books and pictures, but the best way to really understand a battle is to walk the battlefield and see the land firsthand. Only then can you fully appreciate the military potential of the land, the hills, trees, hedges and rocks. You can see for yourself where people might have taken cover or where people might have fired from.

The land might be changed in some ways from when the battle took place, but a visitor can still understand the battle better by seeing where it actually took place. At some battlefields, they give driving or walking tours with a knowledgeable tour guide. At others, you are free to walk yourself around and experience the battlefield self-guided.

Many people go on vacation to towns near famous battlefields and can enjoy the rich history on their own time. There are also many museums and memorials near battlefields to observe and many people go to pay their respects to the fallen at war cemeteries. Such trips are offered in certain places in France where you can visit WWI and WWII battlefields. For example, you can visit the town of Bayeux, France and visit the D-Day landing beaches of WWII. You can also visit the town of Arromanches, France and enjoy the sight of Omaha Beach. Places like these offer tourists other attractions as well as historical battlefield visits.

By visiting a battlefield, a person can learn so much more than any history book can tell. It is one thing to view a picture of the area where a famous battle took place, but it is a whole other thing to be standing on the soil and breathing the same air where a battle took place. Visiting a battlefield is a must for any history lover.
