The many American battlefields were created by 3 conflicts: the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812 and the Civil War. There are 677 battlefields from the Revolution and the War of 1812 combined and hundreds more from the Civil War. These battlefields range throughout 26 states.

The first battle of the Revolutionary War was the Battle of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775 in Concord, Massachusetts. It was also here that the famous ride of Paul Revere took place when he rode to Lexington, 6 miles from Concord to first warn the Americans that the British were coming. The last battle of the Revolution was the Battle of Yorktown on October 6-19, 1781, when the British surrendered at Yorktown, Virginia. In between were such famous battles as the Battle of Bunker Hill on June 17, 1775 in Massachusetts and the Battle of Saratoga on September 19, 1777 at Saratoga, New York. This battle is considered by many as the turning point of the war.

The War of 1812 was composed of 6 major campaigns at 6 different sites. There were battles along the Canadian-American border region from 1812 to 1815. At the Battle of Chippewa, across the Canadian border, a battle took place in July of 1814. The Battle of Lundy’s Lane was also in July of 1814 in Niagara Falls, Ontario. In August of 1814, the Battle of Bladensburg took place in Maryland. The Battle of Fort McHenry took place in Baltimore, Maryland in September of the same year. The last major battle, the Battle of New Orleans took place from December 1814 to January 1815 in New Orleans, Louisiana and Alabama.
